Looking back, looking forward: How do we make Wales a better place for people with learning disabilities for the next 40 years?

UDIDD Confrenece1

2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the ground-breaking “All Wales Strategy”. Wales was the first country to call for an end to people with a learning disability living hidden lives.

The Strategy offered leadership and resources to develop community inclusion. It brought many positive changes.

In 1983, the Strategy faced many challenges and not everyone believed it would work. Now 40 years later, we are again facing huge challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic and the difficult economic situation have hit people with learning disabilities, their families and the services that support them very hard.

This event will celebrate the successes of the All Wales Strategy, reflecting on what it achieved and the lessons that might be learned moving forward. We will present evidence on the impact of the pandemic on people with learning disabilities, their families and on services.

We hope that the event will allow people to reconnect and discuss how we can work together to make Wales a better place for all people with learning disabilities and their families.

The Unit for Development in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (UDIDD) at the University of South Wales is hosting this event with the support of some of our partners that we worked with during the pandemic, including Cardiff University, All Wales People First, All Wales Forum of Parents and Carers, and Learning Disability Wales.
